Searching for McGowans in AL early 1840s. Archibald and Margaret are in family court records and may have died leaving a small child under age of 5 - named William. Margaret is on 1840 census in Talladega County....living near Enoch Stephens and wife Mary - in Cheaha Wilderness area in what was Clay County. Their first child was William McGowan Stephens. Enoch is listed as a farmer and son later notes he was a Baptist and ardent Democrat. Possibilities: 1. they could have taken in the child and kept his family name (William McGowan). 2. they took a name from Enoch or Mary's line as his middle name. Either way I am searching for any information from a McGowan line. Census shows Enoch was born in Ky.
