Ralph,
They are not listed on the 1850 census.
We beleive they arrived sometime between 1851 to 1853. Because their Eldest Son James is listed as being born in Scotland in 1851, and their next born Katherine is born in NJ 1853.
They 1st show up on the 1860 Monmouth County Shrewsbury Census-but not written as McGowan, listed as McGone or Megone. We do not have an approximate DOM for Hugh and Bridget, we haven't been able to discover their origin in either Ireland or Scotland. We do have names and DOB as follows from 1860 Census:
Hugh McGone (McGowan) born 1830
Bridget " born 1832
James " (born in Scotland) 1851
Katy (born in New Jersey) 1853
Thomas born 1857
Mary Anne listed as 6 months old
Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.
