I am researching a family of McGowans. At least two brothers; Hugh and Patrick emigrated from Ireland.Possible other brother - Cormac.
Hugh b. 1824 came alone in 1848.Patrick b. 1829 came later 1850/51 possibly with a sister Mary. Both brothers were living in Brooklyn in 1860 - they are both in the 1860 census.Hugh had several sons; Hugh Jr. Peter (later a detective in Yonkers), Michael and daughter(s).Hugh's wife was named Elizabeth, also born in Ireland 1824/25.
Patrick's wife was also named Elizabeth, also born in Ireland 1838/39.
Patrick and his Elizabeth had at least two daughters, Hannah and Mary.
Patrick and Hugh appear to have married after they arrived and all the children appear to have been born in New York.
I would like to know where in Ireland these McGowans resided. The O'Neils were land reparation residents of Co. Mayo having been forcibly relocated during the Cromwellian times.
Hannah married John H. O'Neil of Hamilton, Ontario and had eight surviving children: John, Ethel, Charles, Edith, Harold, Florence, Sidney and Thomas.Hannah died in childbirth at age 40. There was a Canadian connection between the McGowans and the O'Neils. If this is familiar to anyone, please post a reply. other surnames include: Moore, Jolley. MacKenzie, Brophy.
