Iles Funeral Homes-Dunn’s Chapel Edward V. McGovern Born in Davenport, Iowa on Apr. 18, 1925 Departed on Sep. 5, 2009 and resided in Des Moines, IA. Visitation: Tuesday, Sep. 8, 2009 Service: Wednesday, Sep. 9, 2009 Edward V. McGovern, 84, died of complications from pneumonia on September 5, 2009 at The Kavanagh House on 56th in Des Moines, Iowa. Mass is set for 10 a.m. at St. Theresa Catholic Church on Wednesday, September 9, 2009. Father Larry Hoffmann will celebrate the Mass. Ed was a man of deep faith and a dedicated member of the church for more than 54 years. He served as a church volunteer on numerous occasions. Ed was born on April 18, 1925 in Davenport, Iowa. He was the eighth of eleven children born to Hattie Belle (Keyes) McGovern and Charles McGovern. Ed graduated from Davenport High School. Following high school, Ed enlisted in the United States Army where he served in the 94th Infantry during World War II. He was honorably discharged in February 1946. After he completed his military service, Ed enrolled at St. Ambrose College in Davenport, Iowa. In just two years and nine months, he obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in economics and a minor in German. He was the first member of his family to graduate from college. Subsequent to graduation, Ed secured employment at the state agency, formerly known as the Iowa Employment Security Commission. He was employed there for three years. Then Ed commenced his thirty-eight year career at Iowa Power and Light Company, now known as Mid-America Energy. At "the power company," Ed worked as an accountant, and a department manager. He was a recognized expert in coal accounting, and had published an article on the topic. He was a frequent contributor on coal accounting at national conferences. On February 18, 1950, Ed married the love of his life, Marilyn J. Chekal of Clinton, Iowa. They were married at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Clinton. They resided in Davenport, Iowa for three years following their marriage. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. His extended family was paramount to his life. Ed traveled extensively with his wife. He relished solving the daily crossword puzzle, reading books, playing both bridge and poker and watching the University of Iowa football team on television. In his younger days, he enjoyed golfing and playing volleyball. Ed is survived by his wife. Other survivors of Ed, include his six children and their spouses. They are Miki McGovern, (Jack Janda) of Woodward, Iowa; Monica Briggs, (G. Raymond Briggs) of Clive, Iowa; Matt McGovern, (Rebecca Stamper McGovern) of Florissant, Missouri; Marty McGovern, (Candy Paulis) of Indianapolis, Indiana; Mark, (Pam McGovern) of Gretna, Nebraska; and Mike McGovern of Omaha, Nebraska. Ed is also survived by his ten grandchildren, their spouses and three great- granddaughters. Finally, Ed is survived by his sister, Pat Ginn of San Leandro, California and his many nieces and nephews. The visitation is from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, September 8 at Iles Funeral Homes - Westover Chapel. A rosary will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Theresa Catholic Church.
