Kenneth, on my side of the family, the spelling of the name was mcGonigle and was changed in 1925 just before they boarded the ship to emigrate to Canada. The purpose was to 'protect the guilty' -- IRA and that stuff.

They were from Cushendall, County Antrim, and I am having a heck of a time trying to trace further back than my great grandfather. Eventually will get some.
