I, too, have spent hours deciphering John's pension papers and I think I can fill in a few words for you but I have also read a few things differently than you - nothing major but just different.
I'll try to post my differences immediately after yours with yours marked "D" for Don and mine with "F" for Frieda.
Beginning with John's statement in Tazewell County Court:
D: ... aforesaid, it ////// a //// of //// having sworn to fine and //// on a ///// assurance.
F: ... aforesaid, it being account of service having sworn to fine and imprison on a /////assurance [I've never been able to figure out that word before assurance].

Then where he is talking about the men under whom he served, you have Col Samuel Jack. I had read it at Col Samual Doak

I read it as "the ball passing through the fleshy part of the leg."
