I am also researching the McGiverns that have an Edinburgh link. I am still trying to place this jigsaw together, but I'll share what I have, starting with my point of interest;

Michael McGivern, born 1845'ish Rock Corry, Co Monaghan, Ireland. First wife: Bridget Gange, died giving birth to Patrick McGivern 30 Dec 1866. Second wife: Helen McKenna, born 1845'ish in Monage, Dartry, Co Monaghan. Together they have atleast seven more children, as follows;

1.James McGivern b.1867'ish.
2.Catherine McGivern b.1869'ish.
3.John McGivern b.1871'ish.
4.Bernard McGivern b.1872'ish.
5.Anne McGivern b.1874'ish.(Married William Cline 1896).
6.Peter McGivern b.1875'ish.(Died 1900 in South Africa).
7.Michael McGivern b.1877'ish.(Died in New York).

(All this information has been passed along the family, so it may not be that accurate.)

So, the whole family up sticks and moves to Edinburgh, Michael being employed as a 'Scavenger'.

Patrick McGivern, born 30 Dec 1866 in either Ballybay or Dawsongrove, County Monaghan, Ireland, (child of wife number one), is my ancestor.
He marries Catherine Keenan (or Kathleen, depending on which certificate you read) on 12 Aug 1890 at St Patricks, Cowgate, Edinburgh. At this time he is employed as a Mason's labourer, residing at No.18 Pleasance, Edinburgh,
and has three children;

Catherine McGivern b.24 July 1892
Mary McGivern b.11 Jan'1894
James McGivern b.25 Oct 1902.

Catherine and Mary are born at 66 St Mary's Street, Edinburgh and James is born at 197 South Wellington Street, Glasgow.

So it appears that at least some of the family re locate to Glasgow between 1894 and 1902.

James McGivern b.25 Oct 1902, my grandfather weds Mary Gow b.7 Sept 1900 and they have three children;

Marie McGivern b.19 Sept 1934 (my mother)
James McGivern
Beatrice McGivern.

I have had a look at the 1881 census (for the family I am interested in) and have come up with the following;
Resident at 4 Millers Close (171 Canongate), Edinburgh.

Bernard McGivern 5 years
Ellen McGivern 40 years
James McGivern 9 years
John McGivern 11 years
Mary Ann McGivern 3 years
Michael McGivern 7 years
Michael McGivern 44 years
Patrick McGivern 18 years
Peter McGivern 35 years

As for the 1891 census, I cast the net that bit further and came up with the following McGiverns in Edinburgh;

Bernard 16, Canongate District
Catherine 25, Canongate District
Charlotte 27, Newington District
Helen 45, Canongate District
James 60, Canongate District
James 28, St Giles District
James 21, St George District
John 29, Newington District
John 20, Canongate District
Mary A 15, Canongate District
Michael 55, Canongate District
Michael 19, Canongate District
Patrick 25, Canongate District
Patrick 20, Canongate District
Peter 10, Canongate District
Sarah 0, Newington District
