John Ezekial + Lurana Murnahan in Lawrence Co., OH

I am relation to the Murnahans and have researched this particular McGirr line in Lawrence Co., Ohio and figured that I would post what I have, just in case it might help someone connect their family. I have much more on the Murnahans, nothing else on the McGirrs.

Lurana Murnahan was the daughter of Edward Murnahan and Eliza Ann Christian. She was born April 22, 1849 and died July 28, 1924. John Ezekial McGirr was the son of William C. McGirr (b. 1820) and Elizabeth Jane Warneke / Warnick (b. 1823). He was born August 8, 1849 in Lawrence County and died June 28, 1937. Lurana and Zeke were married on Jan. 25, 1871. On Zeke's death certificate it states father was born in Baltimore, Maryland. His parents were married in Allegany, Maryland on July 16, 1841.

According to the 1850 and 1860 Lawrence Co., Ohio census Ezekial had the following siblings:
Josiah F. McGirr - b. 1842 in Md
Rachel McGirr - b. 1845 in Md

1890 -- Lawrence Co., Ohio Special census for Civil War Vets and Widows listed for Lawrence twp. as John E. McGirr, pvt, Co. H., 45th Ky Mt. Inf.; entered July 14, 1863; discharged Feb. 14, 1865; served 1y, 6m, 0d; disability: saber wound to feet and rheu.

1900 -- Lawrence Co., Ohio census listed as McGirr, John E. - Aug. 1848 age 51, mar. 29y, Oh at sea MD; Luranna - Apr. 1849 age 51, 6 of 11 kids living; Caroline - Aug. 1880 age 19, John E. - May 1882 age 18, Jackson - Feb. 1884 age 16, Ette - Oct 1889 age 12, Metty - Jan. 1889 age 11

1910 -- Lawrence Co., Ohio census listed as McGirr, John E. Sr. - 62, mar. 39y; Loranna - 61, 6 of 11 kids living; John E. Jr. - 27, Jack - 25

1920 -- Lawrence Co., Ohio census listed as McGirr, John E. - ??, Lurana - 70, John - 37

1924 -- July 28, Lurana's death certificate.

1937 -- June 29, The Ironton Evening Tribune obit reads:

John McGirr Answers Taps; Funeral Services Thursday

Taps were sounded by the heavenly bugler Monday evening for John E. McGirr, one of the best known Civil War veterans in the county and one of the most active in recent years.

Mr. McGirr, who was one of three veterans who participated in last Memorial Day parade, passed away at Ninth and Spruce streets, where he and his son John McGirr Jr. resided. He had been ill for only one week and his death came as a shock to relatives and friends.

Mr. Mcgirr was better known as "Zeke" McGirr. He was born August 8, 1849 at La Grange and enlisted in the Union Army at the age of fifteen years as a member of Company H. 45th Kentucky Regiment. He returned to Lawrence county when peace came and had since resided here. He and his son alternating between residence here and at Kitts Hill.

Mr. McGirr was preceded in death in 1924 by his wife. Surviving children include John McGirr at home, Jack McGirr of south Sixth street, Mrs. George Clement of Kitts Hill, Mrs. Caroline Joseph of Ironton, Mrs. James Harvey of London, Ohio and Mrs. Mettie Wilson of Ironton. He was a member of Bald Knob U. B. church and last services will be conducted there Thursday at two p.m. with interment in Bald Knob cemetery directed by Phillips.


Both John E. and Lurana (Murnahan) McGirr are buried in Bald Knob Cemetery, neither have a stone.
