Dear Annie
I have been speaking to my mother by telephone and she is quite delighted and fascinated by the information you have unearthed. She is not aware of her father being involved in the transportation of a replica monument to New Zealand however, although of course he may have been.A possibility is thatthere were so many McGimpsey's that it was another similarly named member of the family engaged in this activity. But we are curious to know why a replica would have been transported.I note that in the Forum are entries by New Zealand McGimpsey's: was there a recent (well, 19th century) connection?
As for Terrence McGimpsey, he was indeed my mother's cousin being the eldest son of Uncle Harry (co - founder of H&J McGimpsey and one of my grandfather Julius' (Jule) older brothers) and Auntie Peg, and brother of Raymond. He died tragically at the age of 30, while taking part in the Circuit of Ireland Rally, at Easter 1959.Terrence was married to Betsey Close from Kircubbin, and had a son Brian, and daughter Fiona, who was born after his death.Fiona would be my age.By way of an aside, I met her when we were both about the age of 10 or 11.My grandmother, May McGimpsey, had taken me to visit Auntie Lena - wife of another of my grandfather's brothers, Johnny, who was I think by then deceased - for afternoon tea (an Ulster convention of which I have fond memories).Fiona was also there and we were left to our own devices in what was perhaps the lounge of Lena's house which was in Moira Drive, Bangor. We sat in excruciating silence, both too shy to speak (what does a boy of that age have to say to a girl?).What was probably half an hour seemed like an eternity. It is strange how such a non-event is etched onto my memory.
Your reference to a 'family fall out' was interesting. My earlier reference to such an event was a misunderstanding on my part of the separation of my great-grandfather, William, from his wife, Margaret. My mother, who declared in putting me right on this matter that she was not sure whether or not to be so blunt, attributed this state of affairs to William's proclivity for a drink. His sons did not approve and so moved their mother to Bangor.Incidentally, my mother, Sheila, is most curious to know if your Aunt Jeannie knows anything of her grandfather William's wife, Margaret McGimpsey (nee Mahwhinney)
I would eventually like to plot a family tree and will be investigating the availability of suitable computer software. It will be fascinating how to see how the pieces of the jigsaw fit.
Regards for now
Richard
