ALEXANDER MCGILVERY of County Cork, Ireland
Searching for descendants and ancestors of Alexander and Ellen (nee Farmer) McGilvery of County Cork, Ireland. They were married 1852 at Kilshannig by Mallow and had 14 children over the next 20 or so years including Thomas (my great grandfather), Richard, Ellen, Anne, Isabella, Catherine, John and Edward.
The first four, along with their mother Ellen, were living in the S.F. Bay area in 1900 while Edward apparently ended up prospecting in Nevada. This accounts for five of the six surviving children (out of 14) clamed by Ellen in the 1900 Federal Census. John died in Her Majesty's Service in Malta, ca.1886. No idea as to the fate of the remaining 8 children.
Alexander McGilvery may have been born in County Antrim in the north of Ireland, but was more likely from Barony, Lanarkshire, (Glasgow area) Scotland. Ellen Farmer was probably a third or fourth generation English transplant. Both, I believe, of Protestant ancestry.
Other surnames (and given names) associated with this family include Cordy (Annie, John and Albert), Stegman (Edward), and Landresse (Lorraine and Clarence). Other McGilvery given names include Milton, Adelaide, Jane, Ella (from Ellen or Hellen), Benita and Ruth.
Lots of speculation here, so am looking for confirmation or correction of and/or addition to the above, as well as dialogue and sharing with fellow descendants of Alexander and Ellen McGilvery.
