Dear Brendilee,
It was not uncommon for persons to adopt a shortened spelling of their names , sometimes just for covenience or using their nick name.
My g/mother was Annie McGillicuddy who was born in County Kerry Ireland. Most Irish McGillicuudy's originated from this County. You may have to back track to search marriage certificates from towns she spent some time etc..Cemetery inscriptions, asking older relatives etc.
All the best
Bernie
