My great grandfather William McGill b. 1848 in Tipperary Ireland and his 2 brothers: P. or D. McGill b. 1851 Greenock,Scotland, (10 days before the 1851 census was taken), and I. or J. McGill b. 1854 Greenock, were listed on the 1861 Greenock census at a "ragged school". Only initials were used. Apparently their father, William McGill b.1822, was in a poorhouse at the same time on the census. Their mother, Ann McGill b.Ireland(maiden name unknown, possibly Dowden) was not on the 1861 census. I wonder if she had died at or soon after the birth of their last son or was in a poorhouse as well. Is their any way to find out the actual names and birthdates of the 2 brothers and Ann not knowing their actual names? Is it possible to find a poor relief application for William McGill probably made sometime between 1854 and 1861? William McGill b.1822 was the son of William McGill and Mary McFie. I know that William (1848) emigrated to Ontario Canada sometime between 1861 and 1871 as he is listed on the 1871 census in Lanark County, Ontario. I have all the info on him in Canada. What I don't know is: What were his brothers' actual names? Did his brothers come with him to Canada or stay behind and what happened to them ? What happened to his father William and his mother Ann ? What was Ann's maiden name and when and where did she die? If anyone can help with this it would be very appreciated.
