Hi Tom,
I wonder if we may have some ancestors in common. The J Macgibbon/McGibbon that I am searching for has a large number of descendants living here in Australia. It has been common knowledge in the family that there is a second family in America. My husband would be a 4th generation descendant of the man that we are looking for. The strange part is that although (in Scotland), I can trace his first wife's family, (her sister is buried here in Melbourne), and also his son's wife's family, he (John1), is almost a complete mystery as far as where he came from, and his immediate family. The son who was left behind in Glasgow, (also John) was married in Paisley in 1848 but there are no parents listed in the IGI entry. He, (John2) had four children in Paisley and 2 more here in Melbourne.
I found a reference to a John Macgibbon on a `Family Tree Maker CD' of `Scottish Immigrants to North America 1600 - 1800's'. It gives a parent and an address in Glasgow, and a second reference to a J McGibbon who sounds likely to be the one that I am searching for, in Canada. I have been trying to trace a link/information re this person for so many years and would love to at last, have some success.
May I wish you a Happy New Year - it is 1 am on Jan 1 here as I write.
I hope you will forgive the delay in answering your message, I have not been on line for a few days. If you wish to contact me directly instead of via the message board I will be quite happy for you to do so.
Regards from Barbara Macgibbon
