I know what you mean. I've run into that several times. I have many ancestors that applied to the Cherokee Nation in 1896 and to the Miller Roll later. All but one were denied due to not enough evidence. I have to wonder which ones were telling the truth and which ones were after some free land. Someone was telling the truth as a recent DNA test shows me to have 22% Native American DNA. I highly suspect that to be on my Dad's side (not the McGehees) as my great grandfather spoke the language and had several ear piercings which he refused to explain. Interestingly, though, he nor his parents ever applied for any annuities. Go figure.
