McG variations with Indian? Very likely. For the 1900 census Indian Territory, it's not a true situation for many folks described as Indian of any tribe--got some cousins who tried for tribal membership and described themselves as a tribal citizen complete with fractions like 1/2, 1/4, etc. but they didn't get admitted on the Dawes Rolls, so they aren't offically Indian of any tribe regardless. The same groups were white on the 1880 census before they decided to try for possible "free land" allotment when the Dawes commission were deciding citizenship.

Enough tribal citizens managed to hide out during the removals to make research interesting for their descendants.
