Mervyn
You are researching exactly the same area of McGaws as me - Wigtownshire & N.Ireland. My missing Josiah Alexander McGaw was born c.1825 in Belfast (info from 1861 census in Preston Lancashire, England)It is after this census that I have lost him although I think I have found his possible children living in the Manchester area by the 1890s and beyond & maybe a connection with Australia which I am chasing with someone's help on this Forum. His father was Robert born in 1784 in Cardrain Wigtownshire (the place needs double checking yet). Robert was married to Mary born Ireland. Surname not known but also born c1784. Mary & children were in Manchester GB in the 1841, 1851 census & some later. Robert died Manchester 1832 aged 48. He was a cotton manufacturer. Robert & Mary's children all born Ireland from 1806 to 1828. Robert's parents were Hugh McGaw & Agnes Templeton of Cardrain if I have the right Robert! He was the only Robert born 1784 that came up on the IGI but of course this isn't a full proof way of finding everyone. All the christian names you mention are siblings of Robert & we have Hughs right through to the McGaws living in England in the 1870s. Please get in touch if any of this connects with anything you have. Josiah is the brother of our direct line & I want to be able to know as much as possible about all siblings - the best way to go back another generation.
