I'm not sure if it's just a coincidence but, although I never met my grandfather(it's a long story), I was able to obtain a copy of his death certificate. Although on his death certificate his name is listed as "August James McGaren", his parents are listed as "James McGaughran" and "Mary Dunphy". And although the death certificate says he was born in 1896, I have since searched the social security website which indicates a year of birth as 1895.I think the info on his death certificate was given by someone who wasn't really clear on all the facts. I'm still in the process of trying to obtain a copy of his birth certificate. But I thought it was interesting when I stumbled across your posting. My mother was born in Brooklyn. The only picture I have of my grandfather is a picture of him with my mother (at age 9) on a Brooklyn rooftop.
