Tom
I am researching my family history and on my mother's side we have McGarvie's who lived in a small village called Stoneykirk near Stranraer in the South West of Scotland. They were a family of fishermen and crofters living on a croft called Cairngarroch in the 1700s.I can't seem to trace further back but I do know that McGarvie is an old Irish name and Stranraer is the jumping off point for Larne in the North of Ireland. In amongst all the McGarvie's there was a Thomas McGarvie and today a James McGarvie still lives on Cairngarroch in Stoneykirk. Hope this helps.
Regards
Eleanor
