Can you say where (e.g., county?) in central Ohio James Mcgarvey was from? From my census records of several "James", I only find two who even come close to your James; one born Ireland (earlier than your date), other born in Ohio.
First: James McGarvy (no "e"), born ~(1825)/Ireland, found 1850, Jackson Co Oh; one of several "laborer" listed under a John Tennihill household, but the only McGarvey.
Second: James McGarvey, b~1831/Ohio. In 1850, Auglaize Co, OH; living with Armstrong family (John, 40/Oh; Harriett, 23/Oh; John, 3/Oh; and Rebecca, 38/Oh).
There is a "Jas McGarvey" in Napa Co, CA (1860 census, Napa Twp, page 104).I don't have the details, but that might be worth looking into if you haven't already. There were only 2 other McGarvey listed in the 1860 census within California (Sacr. and Sier. counties).
There was an Oliver McGarvey listed in the 1850 census, El Dorado Co, CA.Oliver, 25, was born in Ohio, and was listed with 4 other miners (Jacob Clark, John Allison, Silas Allison, and Joseph Smith).
Lastly, how certain are you of the birth dates?James seems pretty old to be having a child, although obviously his wife's age would be more of a factor.
