In the 1825 treaty of Indian Springs, Benjamin McGahee is listed on frame 625. According to family lore, my ggggrandfather, a Creek indian named Tuskegoh Tustunnuggee, a cousin of Chief William McIntosh, Creek name Hutkee Tustunnuggee, took Benjamin's surname after McIntosh was murdered by Tuscaloosa Creeks who were furious at McIntosh for ceding Creek land to the whites in the Indian Springs treaty. Like most native-American records, this was verbal, but this treaty does show a Benjamin McGahee and Tuskegoh Tustunnuggee. Jasper County is located next to Butts County where the treaty was signed.
