Those of you doing research on The McGahee family should jump to Forum McGaughey, and McGaha,McGaughy, and McGahey. As I'm sure you know few of our ancestors in the very early days were able to read or write. Most of us are linked to McGaughey,William B. Ireland, moved to PA.MA in 1738 and settled on 400 acres of land belonging to William Penn Jr. William and Margaret had five children John b.1711 Ireland,James b.1724-28 Ireland,Isabella ?, William Jr. b. abt 1738 Scotland, and Alexander abt.1740 Lancaster PA. Alexander was deeply involved in the American Revolutionary War. Fort McGaughey NC.was named in honor of him. He ended up in Rutherford Co.,NC and appears on many records. My gg grandfather Benjamin was born McGaughey 1790 NC.son of Danile and Elizabeth McGaughey, with brother James Withrow,b.1793,and Mary Ann b.1788. I have found that he could not read or write. His mark appears on a 1838 Texas Land Certificate as an (A). So far I find his named spelled, McGaughey,McGaha,McGahah,McGahee,McGahe,McGahey,McGahan, just to name a few. Our name was hard for common census takers, and clerks to write down correctly. It was written as it sounded, and also shortened due to spaces on documents. Good luck. I know if you cross search you will not be disapointed. If you make a connection I would like to hear the good news. Please email me at [email protected].
