Thanks for the tip about "McPherson". I did see this name in Champaign County, Ohio while looking for McFerrins (or McFerren) and I will go back and check it out. I did a search on ancestry.com using the wild card (McF* & McPh*). The spellings I found were McFerrin, McPheren, McPherin, McPherrin, McFerran, McFerren and even McPharvin. When actually looking at the 1850 McPharvin listing, the original census really looks like McPherrin.
