Hi! There are some 50 families out there looking for Peter McFerren's parents! I am doing intense research into this, and have come up with a few tidbits of informnation. Peter McFerren (1812-1898) was married to Nancy KEIFFER (not Kieffer or Kepher). WEB SOURCE: http://kieffernews.org/k160/marriagePA.htm "Peter McFerren Nancy Keiffer 7/8/1841 Franklin PA" Kieffer Family Association Publication: The Keefer Family Newsletter Editor Bob Espinosa, bob@espinosa-design.com President: Tina Keefe. NANCY MCFERREN claimed to have been born in Maryland (not Pennsylvania) in the 1860 Census. They were divorced sometime in their lives. NANCY "McFERN," may have been living as a "widow or divorcee" with son, GEORGE WASHINGTON McFERREN (McFern), Age 23 and daughter, Margen MARY MCFERREN DITCH and her husband, John Ditch. (THE 1880 CENSUS COLUMN FOR "WIDOWED" was merged with DIVORCED.) In the 1880 Census, PETER RESIDED WITH SON STEPHEN MCFERREN (MCPHERN) & WIFE MISSOURI (MISSOURA). THE WIDOWED/DIVORCED" COLUMN WAS CHECKED. PETER WAS PROBABLY DIVORCED FROM NANCY KEIFFER MCFERREN AT THAT TIME. PETER is buried in Snow Hill Cemetery, Quincy, PA. There is no record of where NANCY is buried there, although it was alluded to on a Keiffer family site associated with this website: http://genforum.genealogy.com/mcferren/messages/6.html Maybe she was buried in the same gravesite as Peter; otherwise, Nancy is a missing person :) THE SAGA OF PETER'S PARENTS! Why I believe JACOB HENRY MCFERREN (1785-1858) and MARY ANNA MARIA COOK MCFERREN (1775-1867) were Peter McFerren's parents: 1) They were married a year before Peter was born. 2) In the 1820 census, Jacob McFerren (father), also Peter McFerren (8 years old), also John and Henry McFerren (teenagers) wee cited. There are female cited on Henry's actual page. In those days, the census did not give names of the people (just sex and age range). I believe CATHERINE MCFERREN SMALL (1814-1848) was Peter's sister, and that JOHN (1804-1874) and HENRY (1810- ) were his half brothers--meaning either Jacob or Mary were married before. 3) Another clue is that there are (at least) 3 cemeteries co-located in Quincy, PA. At the website cited above: http://genforum.genealogy.com/mcferren/messages/6.html most of the people noted above are buried! McFerrens buried in Mont Alto Cemetery: Henry [b. about 1764] d. 19 Apr 1834 at 70 y 2 m 29 d Susanna [b. about 1757] d. 9 Feb 1832 in her 75th y John son of Henry b. 29 Oct 1786 d. 17 Jul 1826 George [b. about 25 Feb 1802] d. 20 Jan 1882 at 79 y 10 m 23 d George (of P. Zion Cemetery, Quincy: Jacob 5 Sep 1785 - 14 Sep 1858 Mary 11 Oct 1785 - 14 Oct 1878 John 1842 - 1910 Susan Monn, wife of John 1844 - 1924 McFerrens buried in the Snow Hill Nunnery Graveyard, Quincy: Peter 12 May 1832 - 11 Dec 1898 Peter, husband of Nancy Kieffer [b. May 13 1812] d. 11 Dec 1898 at 86 y 6 m 29 d (G.A.R. marker) Nancy [b. 2 Sep 1815] d. 11 May 1900 at 84 y 8 m 9 d ********************************************************** I am still researching the Jacob/Mary connection as Peter's parents--and if it turns out they are, Jacob's parents were HENRY MCFERREN (1764-1834) and SUSANNA KNEPPER MCFERREN (1757-1832). THE BAD NEWS: Please see 1880 CENSUS, where PETER MCFERREN (1812-1898) stated both his parents were from "IRELAND." Unfortunately, that census DID NOT ask for their names. If this is true, perhaps his parents were illegal aliens (or undocumented "indentured servants"--which could account for why Peter is an "orphan!" I plan to explore the possibility that Peter (himself) was born in IRELAND (not Pennsylvania) and emigrated to the USA as a young child. Wow, what a mystery!
