Cannot help but notice details of your McFie link. The name was a 16th century Presbyterian abbreviation of the catholic Clan Macduffie, the same root as McFee but probably not McPhee, which is now believed to be from a much earlier souce, although connected. There are two lines of thought about the origin of Macduffie. It is believed that the Iona Club in the 19th century, linked the name to Cormac, Bishop of Dunkeld, to fill in details following the formation of Clan Macfie, just one family in the Macduffie group, which may have come from Machaffie. But the more likely origin is from the Catholic Irish Dubhthaigh (Duffy), which is a highly venerable name of many Irish Saints going back to St. Patrick, who had a bard named Dubhthaigh, and to St. Bridget, whose father had the same name. There was a Leader of Iona in the 9th century named Dubhthaigh, plus St. Duthac of Tain, and the Macduffies must be considered to be "Followers of Duffy" (Dubhthaigh). After all, the Highland Clans were originally Catholic and not Presbyterianism. So beware those who claim it all comes from Dub-sidhe or Dhubhshithe - which means "Dark Man of the Fairy Mound" and not "Dark Man of Peace as claimed by Clan Macfie. It was very convenient to claim that Dub-sidhe MAY be the progenitor of Clan Macduffie, but it was probably not true. Notify Administrator about this message?
