My mother, Betty Lou Gatewood Schultheis, was the first born to Marjorie Lou McPhetridge and Claude Leroy Gatewood on July 12, 1941 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Claude was the son of Maude Leppert (German) and Ellison Gatewood (English). Their parents had each arrived from Germany and England in the 1880s to look for work and seek better opportunities.
My grandmother’s parents were Avella Hammond McPhetridge and Ernest J. McPhetridge. The McPhetridges came over here during the potato famine of 1846 and settled in the North Carolina. Avella’s grandparents moved to Blufton, Indiana where Marjorie grew up.She married and then moved to Owen County, Indiana. Many members of Avella’s family were schoolteachers and ministers. The family believed in education.Avella and her daughter Marjorie were graduates of Indiana State University and were teachers.Avella’s sisters were college graduates as well.
As a side note my mother mentioned this tie. Wilbur and Orville Wright are relatives. One of them was born while the family was living in Indiana and the other was born in Dayton, Ohio. They returned to the home of our common ancestors in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.
