My name is Jeannie Winter and I am responding to your posting on the GenForum for surname McFARLING. You may just be the miracle that I've been looking for and I believe that I have information (a census record) that appears to confirm an R. G. McFarling and Sarah McFarling (I believe nee McGregor) are the parents of your James Drayton McFarland.
I have been searching for the parents of my Mary (Burtlow) Eggleston. In researching the Henry County, Iowa, USA census records where my Mary Burtelow and my Alpheus Eggleston were married in 1852, I discovered whom I'm certain is my Mary (Burtlow on marriage record) living in the household of an "R. G. McFarling" and his wife "Sarah". Also listed in the household is a son named "James D.", age 13 in 1850 and born in OH. This would make James D. born in 1837. It is a perfect match to your James Drayton. I believe that my is connected in some way to the family that you are looking for.
Here is what the census record has:
Source: 1850 U.S. Federal Census, Division No. 2, Baltimore Twp., Henry Co., IA Schedule I, Emum. 25 Nov 1850, p. 206
484 11484 R. G. McFarling age 37 Tanner b. PA [Est. birth year c1813]
Sarah " 34 b. NY [Est. birth year c1816]
James D. " 13 b. OH [Est. birth year c1837]
Lucy F. " 11 b. IL
Josephine " 8 b. "
Mary Burtlow 18 b. VA [Est. birth year c1832]
Note: (1) Mary Burtlow: This surname matches very closely. Birth year matches 1832. Believe my Mary Burtelow, wife of Alpheus Eggleston, is this Mary who was listed in household of R. G. McFarling. Above Mary listed as born in VA where census records state my Mary was born.
Note: (2) McFarling is Scottish (poss. Orig. Irish) surname. Recall 1880 census above in which my Mary’s father is listed as born in Scotland.
Note: (3) Possibility: Was Mary the oldest child of R. G. McFarling and Sarah? Was she a step-daughter of R. G. McFarling and daughter of Sarah by a first marriage to a Burtelow? Sarah would have been est. age 16 or 17 born c1816 when Mary was est. born. Time frame could make Mary an oldest child and married - hence the surname "Burtlow" [Burtelow] when she married my Alpheus Eggleston.
Note: (4) Other Mary Burtlow/Burtelows found are born later and ruled out as the above Mary Burtlow.
Note: (5) Henry Co., IA is also where my Mary Burtelow, wife of Alpheus Eggleston, was a resident and where they married in 1851.
Question: Was Mary born Mary McFarling, married young to a Bertelow, moved back with her parents, if R. G. McFarling and Sarah are her parents?
Janna, I have a Rich Text file that I can email to you of what I've uncovered so far and I'd be most interested in any information that you can share on this R. G. McFarling and his wife Sarah and their family. Very anxious to hear from you! Please email me at "JWinter588@AOL.com" soonest.
