I am seeking anyone related to, or having information, regarding Mary (BURTLOW) EGGLESTON, a resident of Henry Co. IA when she married in Lowell, Henry Co. in 1851, or any BURTELOW/BURTLOW or McFARLING of Henry Co. IA. I believe she may be connected to R. G. McFARLING and his wife Sarah (possible nee McGREGOR), as she was living in the household of R. G. McFARLANND and his wife Sarah in Henry Co. IA in 1850 census record. How is she connected with this McFARLAND family and why was she living in their household? The following is specific information on Mary (BURTLOW or BURTELOW) EGGLESTON, the census record entries for R. G. McFARLAND household and the possible connections: For Mary BURTLOW: Birth: 12 Oct 1832 Virginia (d/rec Clarke Co., IA VR:688 gives birth data;1880 Clarke Co, IA census) * Note: Born Virginia 1860, 1880, 1885 censuses; born Indiana 1870 census. * Note: Father born Scotland, mother born Wales in 1880 census. * Estimated year of birth per age given in census records: - 1860 census, age 26 = born c1834 [note time lapse from other est.] - 1870 census, age 39 = born c1831 - 1880 census, age 49 = born c1832 - 1885 census, age 54 = born c1831 * Note: (1) 1880 census appears to give most specific birth information for Mary and only census to give info on her parentage. Marriage: 10 March 1850 [Alpheus Eggleston obit, but incorrect, year was 1851] m. (1) Lowell, Henry Co., IA 10 Mar 1851 m/rec V: A-G Book C:65; obit (m/r states Alpheus of Des Moines Co., IA, where father Oliver Eggleston deceased, and Mary Burtelow of Henry Co., IA, located adj. to Des Moines Co., IA where Alpheus was resident) Death: 15 May 1892 Osceola, Clarke Co., IA (d/rec Clarke Co, IA VR:688; h - obit; Clarke Co. Cem W.P.A; buried Jackson Cemetery Spelling variations of Mary’s surname in records: Bertalo, Burtello, Burtlow ========================================= 1850 U.S. Federal Census, Division No. 2, Baltimore Twp., Henry Co., IA Schedule I, Emum. 25 Nov 1850, p. 206 484 11484 R. G. McFarling age 37 Tanner b. PA [Est. birth year c1813] Sarah " 34 b. NY [Est. birth year c1816] James D. " 13 b. OH [Est. birth year c1837] Lucy F. " 11 b. IL Josephine " 8 b. " Mary Burtlow 18 b. VA [Est. birth year c1832] Note: (1) This surname matches almost exact. Birth year matches 1832. Believe Mary Burtelow, wife of Alpheus Eggleston, is this Mary who was listed in household of R. G. McFarling. Note: (2) McFarling is Scottish (poss. Orig. Irish) surname. Recall 1880 census above in which Mary’s father is listed born in Scotland. Note: (3) Possibility: Was Mary the oldest child of R. G. McFarling and Sarah? Was she a step-daughter of R. G. McFarling and daughter of Sarah by a first marriage to a Burtelow? Sarah would have been est. age 17 born c1816 when Mary was est. born. Time frame could make Mary an oldest child and married - hence the surname "Burtlow" [Burtelow] ====================================== 1850 U.S. Federal Census, Division No. 2, Jackson Twp., Henry Co., IA Emum. 21 Nov 1850 1439 14394 Richard Burtelow age 21 Farmer b. VA [Est. birth year c 1829] Mary " 16 b. IN [Est. birth year c1834] Thomas A. " 4/12 b. IA Note: (1) This surname matches very closely. This Mary within 2 years of birth year of Mary, wife of Alpheus Eggleston. Also recall Mary, wife of Alpheus, listed as born Indiana in 1870 census, listed born VA in other censuses. Note: (2) Richard Burtelow born in Virginia. Note: (3) What happened to baby Thomas Burtelow? *** Possibility: If this is Mary, wife of Alpheus, she was a Burtelow by a first marriage at a very young age and not by birth. Did she leave Richard Burtelow between 1850 and 1851 and move into the R. G. McFarland household, then marry Alpheus Eggleston in 1851? Was this Richard Burtelow a close relative of Mary? *** Possibility: WPA Project lists Mary (Beutelon) Eggleston as buried in Lewis Cem., Jackson Twp.. Note Richard and young wife Mary listed in Jackson Twp., Henry Co. in 1850 census. Is Thomas A. Burtelow buried at young age in Jackson Twp.? Since Alpheus’ wife Mary was not buried with Alpheus in Maple Hill Cem. in Osceola, Clarke Co. IA, but in Jackson Twp, could this explain why? Was she buried with her child?
