Why Gallia Co, Ohio in the 1850's?

I have two branches, both my maternal line, and my paternal line, that can trace back to Gallia County, Ohio in the 1850's (and prior).

Why? What was going on there - or in Missouri - historically, that two (presumed) unrelated families would find themselves at the north & south ends of Missouri by the time of the Civil War?
