William Turbett McEwen was born May 16, 1834 in Lewiston, Mifflin County PA.His military record is said to be "most brilliant character."He began with "Logan Guards, a portion of "The First Defenders".He enlisted in Company C, First Pa Cavalry which was the Fortyfourth of the PA line.He became a mjor of the regiment February 10, 186.Major McEwen, with this regiment bravely participated in the battles of Drainesville, Harrisonburg, Cross keys, Cedar Mountain, Gainesville, the Seond Bull Run, Fredericksburg, and Brandy Station, to name the major events.At Harrisonburg, the Major was wounded in the shoulder by a fragment of shell.At Brandy Station he was again wounded in the left ankle, and was clubbed over the head with the sabers of the hostile trooopers.He was incapcitated for further servie with the regiment and was sent to the hospital at Alexandria, Virginia.Later he was mustered out and returned to Lewistown PA.He married Arabaella Morrison and had six children.
