I appreciate you responding to my message. Our dates do not go together and I do not see a connection, wish I did. My Grandfather, James patrick McEvoy was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana in l853, parents were Edw. McEvoy and Rosanna Herson (more on the Herson part later) and James had a brother Thomas who was born in Independence, MO. Rosie was from Co. Longford, Ireland and I am sure that Edw would have been from Ireland also. I have the records of Thomas' birth and they show the parents names. However, I wonder if Rosanna, sometimes referred to as Rosie, was really a Herson. We went to Ireland two years ago and there are few Hersons in Co. Longford. When people came over, as you probably already know, gave their name and it was often recorded wrong. If you think of Herson with a brough it could have been Harrison or many other names. It appears that many Irish people just were recorded incorrectly and then kept that name. However, in Independence, MO, they remained Herson. At least let me say that my name is McEvoy (my maiden name), but when I went to IndependenceMO to check out info I went to the Catholic Church that was in the area where my grandfather grew up and some absolutely wonderful woman had recorded all the births in a book and showed the sponsors names and when I went through that book I found a Thomas McEvine and Rosie Herson had a child named Thomas in l855. Well, let me tell you RED lights went up with that McEvine instead of McEvoy. So, I started to research McEvine in the Kansas City Directory. I went to the years that my Grandfather would have been working and there was a JAMES MCEVINE AND THOMAS MCEVINE working in the Independence, MO area and they were McEvines until l878. As close as I can tell that is when my Grandfather, James Patrick McEvine came to St. Louis, MO and remained until he died in l942. He is recorded on all his records here as a McEvoy. My father was his son and how I wish I knew if my father EVER knew that his father was at one time a McEvine. When I found that McEvine reference I started-to myself- say McEvoy with an Irish brough and you can really see where when Edw gave his name to whoever recorded him coming into this country and said he was Edw. McEvoy, that it sounded more like McEvine to the recorder. The interesting thing is that I have gone through phone books from just about every state and you don't find McEvine in any of them. I do know that my grandfather's brother, Thomas, went to MS and married and he was still a McEvine. However I have called the MS telephone company and they have no McEvines. So, you want to talk about a fabulous find. But once I had the McEvine name I was able to locate more on the Independence connection. The census of -I think it is - l860 shows James and Thomas's Mother, Rosie McEvine living with her parents along with her two children, there in Independence. So, I would love to know what happened to their father, Edward McEvine. I have done some searching on cemetery records, but have had no luck. On a paper that looks like it is a sheet from a bible, it shows on my Grandfathers marriage record that his parents were Edw. McEvoy and Rosie Herson. So, NO ONE else in our McEvoy family knew about this McEvine part of our story, but I wrote to all of them and told them. What really gets me is that my Grandfather lived a long life and I remember him well. When I think of it now, he was a child during the Civil War and lived in Independence, MO and there were battles nearby. He info he could have told me and probably some interesting stories But, what child thinks to ask their grandparent about their childhood. I was to young to even think of it. All, I mainly remember of him was that he had sparling blue eyes and loved to play cards and smoked a pipe. He lived to be 90. So, I know you never expected such a long letter, but it was fun hearing from you and you just whet my memory and got me started. I was so into genealogy, but have hit a brick wall and don't work on it as I did. However, we may be going to Independence shortly and I will try to get more info on Edw. and where he is buried. So, thanks for responding. LaVergneMc
