I've just unearthed an ancestor--Rachel McErline. That's the spelling of her last name on an LDS marriage record, but I can't find that spelling anywhere else! Someone suggested it might be McErlean (phonetic similarity). The record, gives neither place in Ireland nor religion. But a later US Census lists her as from Northern Ireland. Rachel was born c. 1829 and married David ART/ARK in 1849. They must have emigrated to the US soon after because their oldest child was born in Connecticut in 1850.
David must have died early because Rachel married John CARROLL between 1852-55 and settled in Springfield, MA. She and John are my gggrandparents.
I'm going to be in Derry and Belfast in August and would like to have some information to pursue on Rachel. I have learned that David's name is also found in Derry, so am tending to concentrate there on the supposition they lived in the same general area. (I am also working on getting a death certificate from MA.)
Thanks for any suggestions for this research.
