I have just recently made a link to McElyeas through my mother's side (she was Frances Gray). After my mom died we were told by her sister, that thier mother's grandmother was full blooded Native American. That would be Ferba Ann McElyea if it was on her mother's side. Ferba (or Fereba or Fereby, or Ferriby) was born 1830 in Franklin Co. IL married Ezekiel Knight b 1831 KY. Her parents were Andrew McElyea b 1800 TN and ?Elizabeth Scarie?, his parents were William McElyea b 1758 PA and Cloe? b. 1760 PA and his parents were Laughlin McElyea b 1726 Ireland and Mary Powers b 1727 Ireland so I couldn't figure out how there could be the Native American connection there and I can't go any further on the other branch so figured there was something wrong with my connections. But you have posted about a McElyea Cherokee connection and also this connection to the McElyeas in IL that end up tracing back to Ireland. Please let me know if you found out anything about the Cherokee connection. Thanks
