To those who descend from Humphrey McElyea new information has been found about his ancestral line. In a publication by Clara Hunt Miller, Humphrey is listed as a son of John McElyea (1777-1843) and Sarah Boone (1776-1855). This is not true even though I would very much like it to be true since my husband is a descendant of Humphrey and Sarah's father was a first cousin to the infamous historic frontiersman Daniel Boone.
In 1850 Humphrey is listed as H McYelea in Weakley Co TN with 3rd wife Nancy Rice and children by his second wife (reported as Mary Rice). Most probably Nancy and Mary were sisters or cousins if Rice was their maiden name. The children are Jane (proper name Elizabeth Jane), James and Robert. In 1860 Humphrey is listed as Donaldson McLeyea/McLezea with Nancy and the boys James and Robert. The family is still in Weakley Co TN, but there's one catch - Humphrey is not the head of the household. The family is living with what appears to be Humphrey's father James who is 84 years of age at the time. James would have been born about 1776 and in NC.
Right now there is a James McElyea listed as born about 1778 to Patrick Henry McElyea and his wife Hannah. This is from Mrs Miller's publication. However no other information on James was available when this publication was printed. In 1820 James is in Wilson Co TN. However this presents one problem - brother Hugh is also in Wilson Co TN. Thus all the McElyea's in Wilson Co TN need to be checked carefully to see if they are related to Hugh or to James.
If anyone has more information on James McElyea born about 1776, please contact me. Thank you.
