Hi Roy,Actually your reference to James Darby McElwee is incorrect. My James Darby is the son of James W McElwee born Aug 17, 1758, Revolutionary war soilder, son of William McElwee II and Janet Black, they William and Janet are burried at Pisgoh Churchyard, York County, South Carolina. My Great great Grandfather James and wife Rhoda Black and children relocated to Pike County Missouri in March 1832, where they established a lumber mill, their sonJames Darby b. 9/17,1802 married Mary Mills b.1810, S.C.He died in Pike County Missouri 9/7,1871.His son my great grandfather William Black McElwee married Emily Tarrent and served in the Confederate Army.I have his sword, Musket loader, Wallet with a lock of hair, and oath of allegance sworn after the wars end. He relocated to Visalia, CA where he was the pastor of the Presbyterian Church, his son my grandpa is Dr.James William and was a dentist in Chula Vista, Ca.My dad Norman Tarrent servedunder Patton at the Battle of the Bulge in WW II and I James R. am the direct link.So I don't see how My James could have been a gold digger or 49er. I have ALL the reoords.Good hunting. I am ever amazed at the in accuracy of documents.I pluged in my info on a search site once in search of my family crest, and they had my family coming here during the potato famon.Lots of false info out there.
