James McElwee 3/13/10
James, Every single McElwee or McIlwee that I have traced ends up in a small area in County Donegal, Ireland known as Fanad. Your James Darby McElwee and his brother were noted on a census as being "Out at the mine". The year was 1849 and they were in the California gold rush. Think San Fransisco 49ers!!! Their father James was a great Revolutionary War hero who was captured by the British and spent eight months on the British prison ship Munificence. James McElwee born c1758 in Virginia and met Rhoda Black while visiting relatives in Abbeville, S.C. He was fromm York County, S. C. Check out the Andrew Jackson connection there! Search Hutchinson, Lesslie and Mcelwee.James McElwee left York County, S.C. c1820 with his family ( all but Ann) and relocated in Missouri somewhere near Bowling Green, Mo. Happy Mcelwee/McIlewee hunting, Roy McIlwee, Scarnton, Penna.
