I have traced my family back to Patrick McElwee born c1805 in County Donegal, Ireland. He married Susan Logue. Here is what I know of their children. They had a son, James McElwee born 1827 (my greatgreatgrandfather)married Catherine McLaughlin.Another son Anthony McElwee born 1844 married Catherine Coyle. Another son Charles McElwee married Hannah Sweeney. Another son Patrick, I have nothing on him. There was a daughter named Teresa and I have nothing on her. James McElwee left Donegal and moved to Glasgow, Scotland where he married Catherine. They had the following children: Charles b1854 d1856, Dennis J. born 1856 in Glasgow, died in the 1920s in Colorado, USA. Patrick b1857 Glasgow, died 1897 Aspen Colorado, he was my greatgrandfather. James A. b1864 Glasgow, died Salt Lake City, Utah 1941. John b1866 died 1936 in Montana.
Anthony McElwee born 1844 and married to Catherine Coyle had a son Charles McElwee b1869 who married Alice Duffy. Charles worked in Aspen, Colorado before returning to Shotts, Scotland. Some of Charles brothers were Patrick, Hugh Michael, John, Daniel, Hugh, James and a sister Sussanah.
The above mentioned Charles McElwee who married Hannah Sweeney had the following children. Mary, Susan, Anthony, John, William, James and Daniel. James was born 1877 and moved to Augusta, Georgia where he became a very successful dry goods store owner. William went to Aspen, Colorado and worked in the mines before returning to Gortnacor, County Donegal. John married Katie McGowan.Anthony McElwee married a McDevitt and ran a dry goods/drapery in Milford, County Donegal. He was also an undertaker. His son Willie McElwee ran the cinema in Milford c1950s. I have no info on Mary or Susan. My family spelled their name McElwee until they came to the United States in 1881. Then they changed it to McIlwee.I suspect that there was much movement from the Donegal McElwees to Northern Ireland but have not been able to make any connections. Well I hope someone finds something here helpful and Happy Hunting to all you McElwee/ McIlwees. Roy McIlwee, Scranton, Penna.
