Roy McIlwee here in Scranton, Penna. I've been searching the McElwee/McIlwee family for quite a few years now and was wondering if anyone has ever connected the York County, South Carolina families with those from the Virginia area. I've heard much speculation that they were related but was wondering if anyone has any concrete evidence. I have traced my family back to the Fanad area of County Donegal and most of the other McElwee/McIlwee lines also end there. Has anyone ever read about the Michael McElwee who in 1878 murdered Lord Leitram? You can look it up and see that Michael McElwee was from Ballywhorskey, the same townland that Michael and Briget McElwee are associated with. Ballyheerin is the actual townland that they were from and I was talking to my McElwee relatives in Fanad and they told me you can see Ballyheerin from their window@@ A great site to search is The Library of Virginia. The website is at www,lva.lib.va.us/index.htm Check out the "What We Have" Section and then search the LVA Catalogs. You'll find Michael McElwee Jr. there. He died Jan 25, 1861. I have found McElwees in Abbeville, S.C. as earley as 1722. Happy Hunting, Roy McIlwee, Scranton, Penna.
