McElwee - Gilwee

I am doing research for a friend on the name Gilwee. According to what I have found, Gilwee and Gilvie are from the name MacElwee. Since the Irish pronunciation of this would sound very similar to Gilwee, without the Mac or Mc, I am convinced this to be true, since I find no Gilwee's in Ireland.

Her Great Grandfather, William Gilwee, born in Ireland in 1824, emigrated into the US around 1826. He was married to Mary O'Foley. They must have lived in the area of New York, Vermont and Quebec because his children were born two in NY, one in Canada, one in Vermont, one in NY again and the last back to Vermont. He was a carpenter...so maybe had to move around with work. I have not had any luck finding him before 1870. In 1870 and from then till his death, he was in Bloomington, Ill.

Any help or information on the Gilwee/McElwee's would be great. The daughter born in Canada is Elizabeth/Lizzie Gilwee, married Joseph Will in Bloomington, Ill. in 1878. William's last child James, was born in Vermont in 1866.
