McElwee/ McIlwee Roy info
Dave, Getting back to the McElwee family that arrived in America in 1750. It looks like part of this family ended up in Virginia (Winchester) and eventually West Virginia (Hampshire County) while another son, William McElwee arrived in the Carolinas circa 1765.These are the earliest McElwees or McIlwees that I have ever heard of. Minnihaha Springs seems to be the town that many of the McElwee/McIlwee family settled around. There was a Jacob McIlwee who had three sons that married three daughters from the Lafollette family. Much of that info I posted on this McElwee site some time ago. A potion of these McIlwees moved out to Ohio (Noble County)circa 1830s. One of these McIlwees married into the Larrick family. Pleasant City, Guernsey, and Buffalo were all locations in Ohio that the West Virginia McIlwees settled. Aaron McIlwee served in the Civil War along with many other McElwees and McIlwees. The William McElwee that settled in York County, S.C.is more than likely a brother to David McIlwee who is probably a grandfather to your William McElwee. Four of the McElwees from York County, S.C. fought in the Battle of Kings Mountain in 1780.Some McElwee researchers beleive that William and David had a sister named Hannah McIlwee who ran away with a Johannes Peter Orndorff born Feb. 6,1744. They settled in western Frederick County, Virginia. Hannah died Shenandoah County, Va. April 29, 1837 age 78. Well Dave, I hope some of this info helps you in your McElwee Hunting. Good Luck, Roy McIlwee, Scranton, Pennsylvania.
