Dear McElwains,
My name is Barbara (Hays) Clayton, daughter of the late Dewey and Florence (Altevogt) Hays. Dewey Hays was the son of Otis and May (Thomas)Hays. May Thomas was the daughter of Willis and Alice (Blewett) Thomas of Simpson and Warren Counties in Kentucky. Alice Blewett was the daughter of Howard and Elizabeth (McElwain) Blewett. Howard Blewett served the Confederacy during the "War Between the States" riding with the 2nd Kentucky Cavalry, Companies B, D and L. He rode with "Morgan's Raider's". Elizabeth McElwain shows up in the 1880 Warren County, Kentucky census and again in the 1850 Simpson County, Ky census, showing her parents as John S. and N.A. McElwain. John S. McElwain is listed as 58 yrs old in the 1850 census and born in Maryland, his wife, only listed as N.A. McElwain being 53 yrs old and born in North Carolina. Now their children as listed as follows:
J.H. McElwain 22 yr old male born Ky
Wm. A. McElwain 21 yr old male born Ky
F.M. McElwain 16 yr old female born Ky
N.A. McElwain 12 yr old female born Ky
E.J. McElwain 10 yr old female born Ky
E.V. McElwain 8 yr old female born Ky (my gg grandmother)
Now the other day I go to Surname helper and find a query stating that a John Sampson McElwain was born to Irish immigrants and that their names were John Sampson and Frances (McElwain) McElwain. This person who posted the query back in 1998, states that John S. McElwain settled in Kentucky.
Then my search goes to Kentucky Biographies re: the McElwain name, and I find an Alexander McElwain of Warren County, Ky born in Cork, Ireland, the son of Sampson and Frances (McElwain) McElwain. Bingo, Alexander is brother to my 3rd great grandfather John Sampson McElwain. Does anyone have any hard resources they know of in Cecil County, Maryland where the early McElwains supposed lived until about 1812, they later would settle in Warren, Simpson, Logan and Todd Counties in Kentucky, just to name a few! Would love to share data with Kentucky McElwain's. Will be visiting Kentucky for a week or more in June to look for wills, deeds, obits, graves, etc.............
