My family's origins are hazy at best before about 1848. That was when my ancestor (and namesake) left Ireland. He landed first in Canada, and was interned there for a couple (?) years. Eventually he moved on to upstate NY-- I think well before the US Civil War.
The name is of unstable spelling: my father has first cousins who spell it differently-- five (?) generations on...
