JOSEPH M3 MCELHINNEY (JOHN2, WILLIAM1) was born 1780 in Colmore Point, in the County of Londonderry, Ireland, and died 05 Sep 1840 in Lawrence, Washington County, Ohio, USA. He married MARY MILLER 19 Oct 1820, daughter of JOHN MILLER and GRIZZIE WITHRO. She was born 12 May 1798 in Middle Edinreagh in the parish of Glendermont near Londonderry in the north of Ireland.. More About JOSEPH M MCELHINNEY: Burial: 1840, He was buried in the old Chambers' burying ground at the Caywood Church in Lower Lawrence County, about 7 miles east of Marietta by the Woodsfield road. Cause of death: 05 Sep 1840, While at work in the woods with his son Joseph, he felt sick and unable to work and went home and continued unwell for 8 or 10 days, having some symptoms of ague. On the 4th of September he was induced by his friends to send for a doctor. Character: He was somewhat loquacious and would never give up his Scotch dialict. Education: He attended school until over 30 years of age, and in the old slow fashion of learning he became what was considered quite a scholar. Emigration: 1831, With his family, he sailed from Londonderry on board the Sail Ship John Buckman and after a long and dangerous voyage of 31 days out of sight of land, landed in Philadelphia in June and stopped 8 days with a friend and distant relative Mr. William O'Neal. Health: He had been naturally healthy during his whole lifetime and had no sickness of any consequence except the Small Pox in infancy in a light form, and a attack of Pleurisy shortly after his marriage. Interests: He was fond of outdoor amusements, particularly that of hunting. From the time of his landing in America, he gave up the idea of sporting with dog and gun, and was incessant at work - always in a hurry. Misc: When emigrating, he brought with him 3 poor persons - John Culbertson, Matty Foster, and her niece Isabell Brookins, the first and second of whom paid him honorably, but the latter was very ungrateful and repaid nothing. Occupation: Followed farming with his father until the spring of 1831 when he emigrated to the United States. In Pittsburgh he wrought at the Smooth Rolls in Miltonberg's Rolling Mill. In Ohio he went into the business of clearing, farming, logging and lumbering. Physical Description: Height about 5'-7". Weight about 160 lbs. Hair brown, Beard sandy, Eyes blue, Skin very white but somewhat freckled, Attitude perfectly erect, and movement sprightly. Religion: He was a member of the Covenantes Church in Ireland, but after he came to Ohio he belonged to the Congregational Church in Marietta and afterwards to the Presbyterian Church in Lawrence for convenience of attendance. Residence: 1831, Came over the mountains by wagon to Pittsburg Pa. In 1832 he removed to Lawrence, Washington County, Ohio on Little Muskingum at the lower end of what was call the "Long Narrows" where he purchased 200 acres of Congress Land.
