Lori,

Thanks so much, but I'm not sure if you can help me. My McElhinny family is from Allegheny Co. I just give info on other families when I do research. But just in case that we are related somehow, this is what I wanted to know. John Henry McElhinney, who is buried at Lebanon Presbyterian Cemetery, West Mifflin, Pa. and who is married to Jane Rath, was born Nov. 14, 1797 in Pa. and died March 1, 1866 in Jefferson Township, Pa. He married Jane Rath, who was born 1806 in Ireland. She died Sept. 10, 1898 in Jefferson Twp., Pa. Her cemetery records state her name as JANE RATH McELHENY. They had the following children:

1.ESTER P. McELHINNEY: 5/24/1820 to 1854.
2. WILLIAM McELHINNEY: 6/10/1822 to around 1896.
3. THOMAS JAMES McELHINNEY: 3/22/1824 to 8/24/1871.
4. DAVID McELHINNEY: 1/4/1827 to 7/20/1898.
5. JANE McELHINNEY: 1830

My cousin Clair McElhinny, nicknamed Arte did alot of research. He wanted to know so bad the parents of John Henry McElhinney before he died. I tried and failed. David McElhinney (David McElhinny) had a son, JOSEPH McELHINNY, who was my grandfather. I guess when Clair dies, he'll find out what he always wanted to know. Clair is the reason why I started doing research in the first place.

JANE RATH'S ancestors were:

ADAM RATH who married MARY MACYEAL, might be spelled differently.

Under:

History of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania
pg. 623

ROBERT M. RATH - farmer, post office Cosgrove. ALEXANDER RATH, the great-grandfather of the subject of this sketch, was a native of Ireland, of Scotch extraction. His son ADAM, married MARY MACYEAL, and they had the following-named children: ROBERT, JAMES, MARGARET, MRS. JANE McELHENNY (my ancestor), MRS. MARTHA HEAZLEP (also spelled Hezlep), MRS. NANCY McALNULTY, JOHN, and ADAM (the last named was a member of the Hampton battery, and was killed at Gettysburg, in the peach orchard). The last-named ROBERT RATH was born in Dec., 1812, in Country Antrim, Ireland, and immigrated to this country with his parents. He had to make his own way in the world, but became a successful farmer. He is a member of Mifflin U. P. Church, and of session; he is a democrat. He married MARY McFADDEN, and their children are MRS. MARY J. CURRY, JAMES H., SAMUEL A., ROBERT M. (whose name heads this sketch), MRS. NANCY B. MORTON, MRS. ELLEN BRIERLY, MRS. CAROLE McCLURE, and EMMA."

In Clair's records it states:

"After JOHN'S death, JANE apparently remained in her old home, living with her sister, MARGARET RATH, and her grandson, JOSEPH W. KENNEDY. Her sons, WILLIAM and DAVID, evidently inherited the farm, and lived on the property with their families. The three families were enumerated in the 1860-1880 censuses."

JANE RATH'S tombstone is next to JOHN HENRY McELHINNEY'S tombstone. JOHN HENRY'S tomstone is large with just his name on it. It has a hand on it, with the second pointer finger pointing up to heaven plus the date of birth and death on it. Next to it is JANE'S. It is small with the last name spelled JANE RATH McELHENEY with 1806-1898 written on it. Even if you could explain why his wife's tombstone is like it is would be helpful to me.

John Henry was born in Pa., so he must has traveled to Jefferson Township from somewhere in Pa. John McMillan owned that cemetery. He was from Washington Co., Pa., so he might have come from there. John traveled different places, so it hard to say where he met John Henry. There was a mention of a JOHN McELHINNEY who had a son JOHN HENRY, so his father could have been named JOHN. I don't know the brothers and sisters of JOHN HENRY, so he could have had an ancestor from Venango Co. Too many ifs. People settled in Elizabeth, Pa or West Elizabeth, so he could have come from there. I just don't know. I got frustrated so I started researching other families. Since it was so hard to figure out who was related to who, I just started putting out info on different families that I found, hoping it would help others.

I appreciate anything you could tell me. Even if you could tell me why John Henry and Jane Rath were buried that way, that could help me.

Thanks for any help and even if you can't help me.

Cathy Farrell

P.S. I got away from doing genealogy but wanted to do again, because my brother became seriously ill. You helped me do just that. Thanks again.
