I think you are correct that the Robert McElhaney in the 1880 census (Morning Sun, Louisa, Iowa?) is a different person. None of the census returns for him or his children (see the other message I just posted in this thread) state he was from Ireland as this person was.
The last census I can find Robert in is the 1860 census, when he was at Sarah Carr's Boarding house in Farmington, Iowa (born in VA).
His wife, Catherine died 7 August 1857 and was buried in the Alfrey Cemetery, Farmington, Van Buren Co, Iowa.
I am missing birthdates for May Goodin and Josephine Goodin. Do you have those?
