Jacob W. McElhaney was born in the year 1828 in Pennsylvania. His wife was named Margaret. At least between 1852 and 1863 they lived in Ohio where some of their children were born. They moved to Pipestone Township of Berrien County by 1866. Jacob W. McElhaney died on 17 Jan 1880 and is buried in the Shanghai Cemetery in Pipestone Township. Jacob W. McElhaney was 51 years, 10 months and 21 days old when he died. Their children were:
       Franklin McElhaney born 1852
       Lemule McElhaney born 1856
       Ella McElhaney born 1863
       Sarah Elizabeth McElhaney born 1866

       Sarah McElhaney, 13 years of age, born in Michigan

Note: Melissa Brant was the daughter of John and Phebe (More) Brant, a cousin to Howard B. Brant who married Franklin’s sister Sarah Elizabeth McElhaney.

Howard Berton Brant b. 29 Jul 1852, married Sarah E. McEllhaney about 1883. Sarah was born 16 Nov 1866 the daughter of Jacob McEllhaney. They lived in Lee Township of Allegan County, Michigan and had children:
Franklin M. Brant b. Oct1883 in Nebraska, married Emma E. Coney on 26 Oct 1908
Myrtle Brant b. Jun 1887 in Omaha, Nebraska, married Charles Piper
Bertha Brant b. Sep 1892 in Michigan, married Frank Lull
Dora B. Brant b. Dec 1894 in Michigan, married Harold Blaire
Howard Bert Brant b. Dec 1896, in Michigan
Sarah E. Brant b. Dec 1898 in Michigan, married … Hall
Frederick O. Brant b. 1901 in Michigan
Melissa P. Brant b. 1904 in Michigan, married … Sliter
Lula I. Brant b. 1910 in Michigan, married Westley Malbone

Howard Berton Brant was divorced about 1910-1920. By 1920 Sarah is living with her daughter Dora Blaire in Kalamazoo and is listed as being divorced. Some of her younger children are also in this same household. In 1930 Howard B. Brant is living in Bangor, Van Buren County, Michigan as is his son Franklin M. Brant. Howard B. Brant died on 17 Dec 1940 and is buried in the Arlington Township Cemetery near Bangor, Michigan. In this same plot is also his son Frank M. Brant and Frank’s wife, Emma E. Brant. Sarah E. (McElhaney) Brant died in Kalamazoo near 15 May 1949 as that is when her obituary appeared in the Kalamazoo Gazette.

Howard B. Brant’s obituary was carried in The Bangor Advance on Thursday 19 Dec 1940 and reads: “Aged Man Passes Away at Home of Son Howard Berton Brant, 88 passed away at the home of his son, Frank Brant, late Monday night. Mr. Brant had made his home in Bangor for the past 15 years. Before that time he lived on a farm north of Lacota. He is survived by eight children. Frank of Bangor, Mrs. Myrtle Piper, Mrs. Bertha Hall, Mrs. Sara Hall, Mrs. Melissa Sliter, Mrs. Lula Malbone, Bert Brant and Fred Brant, all of Kalamazoo. Also by 15 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held in Sherrod’s chapel this afternoon (Thursday) at 2 o’clock. Rev. Ralph Winans, pastor of the Church of God, South Haven, will conduct the service. Burial will be in Arlington Hill Cemetery.”

Sarah E. Brant’s obituary was carried in the Kalamazoo Gazette on 15 May 1949 and reads: “Sarah E. Brant-Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Brant, 82, died Saturday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Bertha D. Lull, 623 Third Street, after an illness of four years. Mrs. Brant a resident of Kalamazoo 31 years, was born in Eau Claire, Michigan., Nov. 17, 1866, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob McEllhaney. She was the widow of Howard Brant. She was a member of the Church of God. Survivors are three sons, Frank M. Brant, Bangor; Howard B. Brant, Kalamazoo and Fred O. Brant, also of Kalamazoo; five daughters, Mrs. Lull, Mrs. Charles Piper, Mrs. Sadie Hall, Mrs. Westley Malbone and Mrs. Melissa Sliter, all of Kalamazoo; 15 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.”
