Wots in a name?

Nothing serious, just a wonder.
I've often seen on Television or heard on radio 'McDowell' pronounciation being referred to many ways. I and my kin refer to ourselves as 'MICKDOLE' if spelt as spoken (probably due to heavy Ulster accenting over the years). Often enough people pronounce it near enough as spelt 'MACDOWALL'. Now I spend most of my time correcting people when reading or saying my name wrong but is there a right or wrong way? Is it important to others as it is to me? How for example is it pronounced in North America?
