My ancestor was William McDowell, Jr. who was a brother to your Daniel of Greenbrier Co. William later moved to Bourbon Co., KY and I have also found references to Daniel and another brother,Josiah, in that county also.

Deed of Bargain and Sale from Daniel McDowell, Sr., to Daniel McDowell, Jr., dated 2 February 1824 for $1.00 plus "natural love and affection," a tract containing 71 acres on the waters of Flat Run and including one of the original corners of his survey of 213 acres and the line of Ruddells 500 acre survey. By a second deed on p. 284, Daniel, Sr. conveys to Daniel, Jr. title to one slave and assorted livestock.
(2)Deed Book R, Part 2, p. 283-284. Deed of Bargain and Sale from Daniel McDowell, Sr., to William McDowell, dated 2 February 1824 for $1.00 plus "natural love and affection," The property description is similar to the above and the seventy-one acres conveyed appears to contain a portion of the 213 acres described above. Recorded 16 Jun 1824 at Bourbon Co., Ky.

Daniel McDowell, received a pension in 1832 while living in Bourbon Co., Ky.,. He enlisted in Greenbrier Co., Va., and served one year in the Revolutionary War in 1776 as a private under Capt. Matthew Arbuckle and Co.. John Neville in the state of Virginia. His pension application dated 13 August, 1832, states his age to be "over 80 years of age." The pension contains no information regarding his family.

Archibald came to Second Creek before 1780 and operated a saw and grist mill on the site of the present Beamer Mill. He died in 1813, leaving his personalty appraised at 1192.75.

Second Creek (W) Va., will probated Monroe Co., VA (now W. Va.) 8/1813; m. Catherine Davis in 1780 & had John; William; James, b. 1781 who m. Margaret Dickson; Walter who m. Patsy Pritt; Ann who m. Patrick Boyd; Jane who m. James Crawford; Margaret who m. George Gullett; Frances who m. Thomas Stuart; Hannah who m. Mason Matthews; Rachel; Malvina; and Catherine McDowell. Names and dates are then given for several of these children.--you can let me know if you need any of those. Perhaps you can find more about Archibald's parent(s) by getting information on his service record. Do you have William McDowell's wife's name? ( Needless to say, this book has hundreds of William McDowells.) I hope this helps.

The Bourbon County Court House yielded the following will and deeds:
WILL of Josiah McDowell of Bourbon County, Kentucky, dated 4 Sep 1832 and proved 4 Jun 1838 which names the following: [Note: This Josiah McDowell is the brother of my William and is named in their father's will.]
(1)Josiah McDowell to be buried "in the Place I have marked out beside my beloved wife." [It sounds as though Josiah McDowell intends to be buried somewhere on his own property.]
(2)daughter Hannah Jackson, wife of Samuel Jackson, received one dollar "having heretofore given her a full portion of my Estate both Real and personal." Bourbon County marriage records list their marriage: "Hannah McDowell and Samuel Jackson married at Bourbon County, Ky., 5 Feb 1795." From: Jordan R. (3) daughter Sarah Ramesey, wife of William Ramesey received one dollar "having heretofore given her a full portion of my Estate both Real and personal,"

In another deed of gift Henry and wife Martha Patton gave parts of the 840 acres where they then lived to William McDowell, who with his wife Polly then sold to William Muirhead whose land it adjoined. William McDowell of Greenbrier County had married Polly, the daughter of Henry Patton in 1798. Matilda, another daughter of Henry and Martha, married Joseph Davidson and moved to Mercer County, Virgijia (now West Virginia). In 1806 Henry and Marth Patton sold land to Joseph Davison and also to another son-in-law, William George, who had married their daughter Jennet or Jenny (Montgomery County Deed Books, C, p. 611; E, pp 470, 583; K, p. 457; Tazewell County Deed Book 1, p. 248; Tazewell County records as found in Schreiner Yantis, Archives of Tazewell County, pp. 64, 214, among others.)
