Bruce, thanks for the info on the surname spelling.

Since my great great grandfather came to the US and we have all of his subsequent family tree, I know that by the tine he got o the US, he and his family spelled their name as McDowall.

In searching the www.familysearch.org site, it shows that Gilbert's parents and his grandparents spelled it with an "e", but from what you say, that may or may not have been the case. My great great great great granffather is James McDowell 1741-1804. Pretty neat to be able to go back that far in one's family tree. The web site did not go back any furthur, so unless I go to Scotland and do more searching, that is probably the most we will know.
