Have determined that Jean Mary McDowall was d. of John Charles McDowall (b. about 1832) and Jane Mary Robson (b. 9 Dec 1830 in Launceston, Tasmania). The Tasmanian Government Archives list John as John Charles McDowell. The family moved to Christchurch, New Zealand when Jean Mary was 4 months old (ie. 1858) and she was educated at the lady's college there. they moved back to Tasmania in 1889.

Can anyone enlighten me as to John Charles McDowall/McDowell's ancestry?
