Alison,
It sounds like there is a very good possibility that there is a connection - our common grounds being Walkinshaw St in Johnstone and possibly the time frame. My great grandfather died at age 36 or so in 1864 in Canada. His name was James and his newborn son (born the same year) was named Robert - in fact the first son of the first son is named James or Robert alternating the two names with each genertion.
I must look for the geneology material which my father collected the next time I have a long visit at my mother's home (my father James McDowall passed away in 1997).
I'll post any additional information at that time.
